Energy Crisis in Pakistan

By Danyhasan • Feb 8th, 2008 • Category: Misc • 65 Comments

Pakistan has been facing an unprecedented energy crisis since the last few years. The problem becomes more severe during summers.However, this winter was no different.During the peak crisis there was a power outage of 3-4 hours everyday. Those without generators and UPS faced tremendous problems. The prices of both continued to increase due to a sharp increase in their demand.

Almost two years ago the then WAPDA chairman who happens to be a caretaker minister admitted that WAPDA cannot meet the current demand for electricity. Its surprising that such a senior and experienced person took so long to find this out.On top of that the government which talked about Pakistan’s supposedly booming economy failed to understand the gravity of the situation. General Musharraf (R) after becoming Chief Executive used to talk about building dams especially Kalabagh Dam. This was one of the many promises he failed to keep. Even after that very few power plants have been set up to meet the demand for electricity.

During the second government of Benazir some independent power plants were set up. Had they not been setup then we would have had a much bigger crisis with life almost coming to a standstill. I come from the software industry which has been badly hit by the present power crisis. On an average the generator at my office is on for three hours. Our work is not much affected but overall the company’s operating expenses have increased.

The policy makers of Pakistan have so far failed to understand one thing.They do talk about making dams and setting up nuclear power plants but why do they not understand the importance and benefits of alternate energy sources such as solar, windmill energy etc. They are cheap and quick methods for producing electricity.Pakistan is a very blessed country because solar energy is available in most cities all year round similarly wind energy is readily available in the coastal areas.These energy sources if tapped can be of great help in reducing the current demand supply gap.

  1. What steps are being taken for the improvement of power supply in pakistan? Are the renewable resouces like wind and solar are being introduced? Or the economy has to suffer?

  2. What are the solutions for this,so that we can improve our energy demand?

  3. Windmills plantation may be a short term remedy of the energy crisis. Alongside River Indus the windmills should be planted in line. Nonetheless the crisis are artificially created. And another curable solution is a long term one which is accomplishment of mega projects which have been surveyed in past years, those projects must be completed, then the energy crisis can be remedied probably in befitting manner.

    You all are right but the problem is Our government is unable to take stand in front of these issues.
    do you know y? because they knows its right time to earn from our illitrate nation. why you all blaming to our govt. u should have to confront because we all are facing on individual basis. plz try to think as individual or collective basis. my suggestion for solution is;

    as like european countries we should install small windmills who can supports our home consumption atleast.

    Well people i will give a presentation on that issue at next week plz plz its request to all of you send me an information regarding that matter on this id

  7. Solving the crisis is simple. The Pakistani Government should rent out the roof tops of all the residential areas and install solar panels, collect the energy and solve the problem. No dependency on foreign powers, nuclear, hydro or oil. Saves tonnes, and with the money saved, pay off the loans and be happy campers.

    basikly we r the muslims by name we do not want to change our deeds phir ALLAH k hukam b tu ha k ma uss koom pa wasa he hukmaran bajata hu jasi kom hoti ha. bus itna solution ha es ka k huda ham pa raham karay amin

  9. surprosing fact that energy crisis comes like a weekend comes in a week. It has been categorically sais by Honble Minister that load shedding will be an aobsolete term in 2009 but we are sorry to agree. To meet energy crisis in Pakistan we are to make our resources vulnerable to our experts for utilising. Hydro and coal having abundant can meet our demands of energy if made utilised accordingly. But seems to be difficult and just rely only on Pakistan Khappey. And Zinda hai BB zinda hai. Aur qoom andhi hai anddi

  10. THE ENERGY crises have been in every nation or country.It is not in pakistan n v should face dis with courage but da problem of our nation is they come on roads burn every next thing that comes on dere way n make violation in thier own state,even the energy house that is safe,people go n burn that away ( jo hai us se b jate hain ).
    only those nation established them as da strongest nation in worls who deals n solve thier problems themselves..GOVERNMENT should thnk on windmil energy while that of solar energy just went vanish n government had waisted millions of dolar on dis project n da end result just economy loss of da nation…so govenment should plan thngs n than move forward n INSHALLAH if v serve PAKISTAN honestly,earnestly,selflesely,with courage,fortitude,determination n with devotion than v can deal n solve our problems and can stand amongst the strongest nations in da world…
