Dr Shahid Masood Sold Himself as Chairman PTV
By Salman Mugsi • Jun 22nd, 2008 • Category: Politics • 21 CommentsThough there is nothing inherently bad in accepting the government job or specifically becoming the chairman of state-owned Pakistan Television, but when you see the whole scheme of things, the appointment of Dr. Shahid Masood, the anchorperson of renowned GEO News TV talk show “Meray Mutabiq” as the new chairman of the Pakistan Television reeks, and it reeks very badly.
The things become more fishy, when you also keep in perspective the recent ban on his program along with the program of Hamid Mir. GEO News then shifted it’s setup from Dubai to Pakistan, and Hamid Mir resumed his program “Capital Talk”, but mysteriously Shahid Masood never resumed, while the slide on GEO told us that he would resume soon.
He did resume, but as the new chairman of the PTV. I still remember his aloof rhetoric and the high rise slogans, and then I read in the media that he stooped so low that he also demanded that along with the hefty salary and all the perks and privileges, he would also get the percentage of earning from his programs aired by the PTV.
PTV is the mouthpiece of the state. It has never changed it’s stance and it’s very hard that it would do so. Shahid Masood may get a lush push job with all the majesty and access to the Prime Minister House and the President House (why not?), but his credible standing has become tainted for ever.
The unknown person like Pervaiz Rashid was better than the Dr Shahid Masood. Pervaiz Rashid was the previous chairman of the PTV during the second term of Nawaz Sharif, who had refused to take any salary from the national exchequer.

Dr.Shahid’s stance on issues have always been reasonable. He never favors any group and stays unbiased. One should be unreasonable and call him a sell out all of a sudden or giving him a chance.
Yes PTV has always been a state machinery but there are chances that PTV might improve under his administration. Lets wait and see.
Resistance is a terminology used in the contest of opposing hindrance.
It is an obstacle so to overcome the exerted or applied forces with the thrust of retaliating impact.
There is a limit to every resistance.
This limit resides on the self designed demarcation line and boundaries which the obstacle and resisting force decides at his desirable, calculated and laid down criteria.
Although the term resistance is always perceived in the contest and domain of retaliator in a good sense but infact it is the relaxation of the applied forces to implement their desire with a thrust of selective force so to enable and achieve the required level of achievement.
However, this relaxation in the format of flexibility has beneficiary effect on the retaliator thus tagging him as resistance whereas, due to the negatively dominant trait or perhaps inacceptance of the term by public at large, domain of applied forces is always degraded and disregarded as miscreant.
This beneficiary effect of retaliator save guard the rapport of the resister although he limits the resistance, if at all, whereas on the other hand applied forces achieve the target, although it is time dependent .
If I perceive and analyze the above criteria of resistance and force, in the conventional and traditional controversy of government functionaries and our so called resistor as retaliator, whether it may be any dick and harry, limitation of resistance will always be observed.
Now if I carry forward my discussion, I would definitely need to define the boundary of limitation of resistance.
Generally boundary of limitation is goal dependent.
It resides on the level of self design achievement and futuristic approach.
Such approaches depend on the perception and platform, reasons as moral, social, economical, national, religious, ego and many such causes, of the resistance.
Although such reasons are always masked during such resistance but nevertheless, their impression can be felt during the process of resistance.
Nevertheless, these masked elements mostly appear evident when emotional factors added by religious or national goal is the precursor of resistance.
Under such emotional and attached paraphernalia’s there is a likely chance to cross over the limitation of resistance by resistor in the form of loss of resistance ,which may end up in loss of precious belonging as life .
It is this domain of sphere of resistance where it is transformed in to sacrifice, tagging it a legend and mark of symbol and insignia.
However these masked element when resides on the goal and achievement of economical ,social or moral or personal motive based resistance they take the route of award and incentive in lieu ,indicating the desired motive and intention and level of achievement or limitation of resistance .
Dr shahid Masood, well known anchor, has achieved the goal as chairman PTV, clearly explaining the limitation of resistance as an example.
It has come as a surprise to all of us I guess but calling it a sold-out is going a bit too far in one’s prespective. One has to become a part of system tp change it. I guess Dr. sahab may have this is mind.
As far as the salary package is concerned, It has been openly told that he would take a percentage of his prog’s but no where has the other perk’s being mentioned as a salary in itself.
About Pervaiz sb quite rightly said that one can not be a burden to National Exchequer but if One is not then questions are raised over the source of income itself. And that has already been done when he was working for the Geo and ARY calling him an American agent. Also Pervaiz sb never did prog for the PTV.
Last but not the least let us hope that it comes as a step towards right direction in making PTV a family TV channel with obsence dominating it going off and away and standard of news as well as other progs beiung raised.
I agree with Talha Lodhi. Let’s judge Dr. Shahid by his actions at PTV.
In a free market. Market decides what is sold and what is bought. Being a marketeer this guy whatever his name is did what market paid for; he has no reservations, moral or ethical guidelines. He sold his conscience all this time everyday because he perceived a demand in the market and now he sold himself - for the right price! And now he will continue what he is best at manufacture disinformation, produce evil, and supervise its distribution in the market. WE AS CONSUMERS MUST DECIDE IF HIS PRODUCTS ARE ACCEPTABLE TO US. CHANGE YOUR CHANNELS AND SEE WHAT OTHERS ARE OFFERING. REMEMBER IN AN OPEN AND FREE MARKET WE HAVE THE POWER.
Lets give him chance of doing something differnt.He is a good historian and knows it very well that political selection on top seats mostly finish as an humillting end.If he would continue his job for which he is popular then surely it would help our old fashioned tv system to improve its old fashioned level but if he would adopt typical ways of sticking to that post then we are here to criticise him.But before his arrival or display of work we have apprehended negative attitude towards him and completely forget his high level researches that he had presented to us through ARY and geos.
Speaking Truth is the most old fashioned but most desired element in public life. The track record you create for yourself predicts your destination; this man has a poor record of creating disinformation and must neither be given a chance nor be trusted, He belongs in that ill reputed brothel where he was with bad fame and trail of mailicious premeditated wrongdoings. He is a manipulator and a blackmailer who has bulldozed his way into an organization run by public money. His entry should be blocked otherwise once there you can criticise as much as you like. PTV is much too dangerous place in the hands of such characters - remember in history there was a man called - Joseph Goebbls with a title of DOCTOR, to boot!.
Relax, folks. Pakistani society operates upon ‘ intrinsic nuisance value’ of citizens. You knew that already. Now -understand that simple concept and re read own history- of humans , manilpualtions, all, in that light. Things would stand out crystal clear. Adieu. Now sit back and relax.
I see no harm in anyone joining the job he/she chooses. Whatever salary package and perks are settled is between the two parties.If one can sell himself better again good luck to them.
The issue here is not the salary . More important is that a person who always claimed to be non partisan in his presentations did have a price tag after all. Or was it a matter of quietning of a big gun who could otherwise have been a source of irritation and concern for the government. We all know too well how the so called mandated parties take the critism. Here it is not the skills of Shahid Masood selling himself but that of Zardari who is a superb wheeler dealer, no price is too high for him if and when he decides to buy.
The other thing to remember for those who have known about Shahid before and an information for those have not , he was during his student days a member of the PSF ie Peoples Students Federation. So his appointment can be described as a case of ‘ Jithey di khoti uthey hi ann khaloti ‘
There you go - ‘Jithey di khoti uthey hi ann khaloti ‘. In this case it becomes all the more important that he is kept out from where is about to get in - PTV is much too dangerous place in the hands of such characters - remember in history there was a man called - Joseph Goebbls with a title of DOCTOR, to boot!.

The appointment also brings to light how someone so wise otherwise can make a slip when it comes to making big decisions. Did Shahid really make an intelligeent move in moving to PTV when the writing on the wall is so clear that even a blind person can see that the present government is not going to last long. It may therefore be a question of packing , unpacking and then packing again wkithin weeks to fly back to his present employers ie if they would agree to have him again.It may be he is a gambling sort ! Whatever the reasons behind but I do not think it was a great move.

DR. SHAHID MASOOD WAS ALREADY TAINED FOR SWITCHING CHANNELS AND NEVER HAD ANY CREDIBILITY WITH THE COMMON MAN. HE MAKES UP STORIES “ACCORDING TO HIM”. What is with this nation that we tend to jump up on sold-out prices even before the thing has been put up in the market.
Dr. Shahid Masood has had affiliations both with IJT and PSF. He in the end of his student political career was a member of IJT. Which happens to have a hardline stance against the PPP.
Anyhow political pundits can interpret it in different ways. One can be that it is yet another clue for Pervaiz Musharraf to lay off for a person whose programmes he didnot seem wrothy enough to be aired on private channels for they were a source of spreading chaos has got the whole STATE Channel to himself for now.
This appointment also seems quite interesting keeping in view Rehman Malik’s recent threat to Dr. Shahid Masood to lay his hands off Zardari and Dr. sb’s subsequent programmes in which he not only openly mentioned the threat but also thrashed Rehman Malik.
It can also be seen as a career jump for a man who was a practicing doctor and only started doing View on News for a past-time activity rising up to the cadres of managing the biggest network in terms of its coverage.
Also the salary and perks of which I already have replied earlier too I would like to add that let us get over the culture of honourary jobs for honourary jobs are managed in the very same way. So it is good to hear that he is taking salary and he should do so.
About Aftab sb’s I would say seemingly irrationnale comments I dont know what could be the reason of them but they seem too out of place when he overwhelmingly opposses Dr. Shahid’s appointment and is too ken to stop him from taking on his new appointment. I gues he too would have his reasons. But if talking out loud you should also share the reasons my Dear sir. :-/
Talha Lodhi Sahib, I am glad you raised question about my “irrational comments”. Before I say anything let me make it clear the perks and the pelf do not bother me in the least; I do wish him this doctor of propaganda to make much much more than the package offered by PTV (if money for him is over and above everything).
Now. Lets see. I considr him as a man with overwhelming and visible political ambitions (capable of doing all and everything for anyone to reach his personal goal) and I consider that an state run organization like PTV should not be run by partisan people. This man has proved to be a ruthless instrument for doing a ‘hatchet job” and he has time and again proved that he is available as “hired gun” for anyone who needs one. His loyalities are too blurred and questionable. He has proved that he has no respect and no sense of proportion for his actions (he gives a damn if supreme national interests are compromised while he is performing his task - like any ‘mafia’ ‘hired hitman’ for him nothing is personal the job has to be done - who cares how), he is hired to demolish some created and perceived “enemy” (for a fee he will even create and implant a perception in our minds - through the tried tested and proved best method which is by painting horror pictures / create and induce fear in innocent, unguarded simple minds of ordinary citizens like myself and there are millions and millions of “me” around. He must do it no matter what disinformation campaign and what manufacturing of false propaganda, no matter how brutally the truth has to be attacked or mutilated - JOB HAS TO BE DONE.
Then for my taste and I consider that we must beware that this MAN HAS A VERY ERRATIC BEHAVIOUR. What is he a Jamiat / Jamaat man or a Jiyala of PPP; what is he a physician or a killer; is he a journalist (with a sense of responsibility) or just a show master (generate revenues, enhance profits) or perhaps a propagandist (destroy the opponents, irrespective of nobility of a cause). What is his comfort zone? was he wrong when with the Islamists or is he right when with Socialists PPP - how does it reconcile with his financial ambitions and Islamic or Leftist political ideology? is he right as a free marketeer (using media for hatchet jobs) or wrong when tramples upon all decent human values like respect for individuals rights and passionate analysis of existing conditions and reason of. It is hard to define, it seems, for himself when he is right or when is he wrong. TOO UNPREDICTABLE.
PROPAGANDIST HE IS! AND THROUGH STATE RUN PTV HE WILL BE USED AND IS CERTAINLY AWARE OF HIS ROLE TO MANIPULATE PUBLIC OPINION BY ANY MEANS AGAINST ANYONE. Well quite an emotional piece my dear Aftab but then I what I was questioing you for was some facts being accompanied along with the allegations themselves.
Meaning thereby that if you consider him a porpagandist or what ever ………………… Was the propaoganda against the govt of Pervaiz Musharraf only and not against the sitting govt. I guess you maybe mixing up critical analysis with propagnda.
Or if not some facts to support your aleggations may just clear my mind with respect to you prespective.

Well, Dr Shahid Masood is no saint. People who expected high should look into his past.
Before joining ARY and then GEO, Dr sahib used to run a think tank in UAE. There are gossips that Dr Sahib was responsible for mishandling lots of funds.
No doubt Dr Shahid has a lot of readings and intellect under his belt but that doesn’t make him a saint. Before the Lal Masjid incident he was heard reminding the Govt of GOVT’s RIT and after the incident he was writing for “woh kon theen aur kahan gaeen”.
These days, Bhands make the most money. Just look at Jahil Online, with added lipstick and face makeup, this bhand is making a ton of money along with leading people astray.
