D.I Khan : Another Battleground After Swat
By Ali Yar Khan • Feb 22nd, 2009 • Category: Politics • 2 CommentsMaulana Sufi Muhammad of the Tanzim Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) is busy in talking with his son-in-law in the Matta area of Swat valley, while fire erupts in the form of deadly suicide attacks in D.I Khan area of NWFP which borders with the tribal region and is one of the most sensitive areas of Pakistan when it comes to the delicate and very alarming balance of sectarian tension.
Now tension is running high in D.I Khan. Now some quarters are saying that if NWFP government wants then a peace truce could be executed in the Dera Ismail Khan. Is that the overt conspiracy of some extremist elements to promulage their brand of Islam in the D.I Khan or it is yet another effort to defame Islam? Or it is just that the other side is settling the scores in the haze of restive situation throughout that area?
As peace is strengthening in the Swat area, perhaps the evil elements are trying to find another battleground for themselves. D.I Khan may be the ideal place for them as the place is already rife with the sectarian tension and both sides are at each other’s throat already.
Government needs to be on its toes and must stop D.I Khan from becoming another Swat. The people of D.I Khan has to play a major role here. If they don’t act now, they will be driven out from their homes like Swatis. Their business would be wiped off and their lives will be hijacked. They need to identify the extremist elements and root them out. They need to support the security forces and they need to take hold of their lives.

Nazia I disagree that hte govt has weak icons leading the deal in Swat. While finer details of the deal are being worked out between the two (TSNM and govt), you have to admit a couple of things. First off, let me ask you… If for a minute, you can get rid of Zardari, who should take over?
Caught between a rock and a hard place, the govt has made it a ‘family’ issue by asking the father in law to lead the talks. In cultures where blood and honor are revered about family, a deal between the two related men might be a tad bit easier. Additionally, the govt has encouraged the provincial govt to hold the talks because they are better suited to drive a pragmatic approach rather than an ‘outsider’ as is the American drone policy. And lastly, with reference to the drones, Pakistan has tried the ‘collateral damage’ approach. We’ve tried arresting, interrogating and bombing militants… have you seen any positive change except for younger and younger children taking up arms?
the answer really is dialogue, development and deterrence. the new modus operandi of fighting the war on terror
