Italy may soon seek a ban on full-face Muslim veils, drawing on debate in France where President Nicolas Sarkozy has described the Burqa as unwelcome and legislators are considering a vote to outlaw or restrict it.
Equal Opportunities Minister Mara Carfagna has said the Italian government will quickly follow in France’s footsteps, breathing new life into four draft bills on Burqas already circulating in parliamentary committees.
“I completely agree with the French initiative, which I think will push other European countries and hence, also Italy, to enact laws on this issue,” Carfagna said this week.
“This is about a sacrosanct battle to defend the dignity and rights of immigrant women. A law is being studied that would ban the use of a Burqa and niqab, which are not religious symbols —that’s not us saying it, but the top religious authorities of the Islamic world, like the Imams of Cairo and Paris.”
Her comments came after a French parliamentary panel this week urged the National Assembly to pass a resolution denouncing full Muslim face veils and then vote on the strictest law possible to ban women from wearing them.
Critics see the Burqa, a full veil with a slit for the eyes as a symbol of the subjugation of women. In Italy, the initiative has drawn strong support from the far-right, anti-immigrant Northern League party in Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative government, though some opposition figures have also applauded the move.
In deeply Catholic Italy — where a European court ruling against crucifixes in classrooms sparked a national uproar – a few small northern towns have already tried to ban Burqas with local decrees, though some of those were later annulled. The ban initiative also looks to have the backing of most Italians.
A poll by the SWG polling group showed 71 per cent of Italians were in favour of a ban on full face veils.

If muslims had been following their religion the way it’s supposed to be followed, no outsider would have dared to act in such a way. The way non muslims have put muslims on the mat is nothing but of our own making!
If it’s really that embarassing for the muslims they should leave countries like Italy and France. ALLAH’s land is big enough for them to make their living elsewhere.

Burqa, or a full veil, or scarf why this has been made an issue for Muslims. I do not want to go in detail, just very few words.
In England you will find many families who even now take care their old traditions. The women wear long skirts, full stockings, a long coat and most of them wear a hat with a veil. Veil has been a part of the high profile women dresses in Europe.
Now you just see the nuns (sisters) in the churches, you clearly see that they wear Scarf, Gloves, and Long Skirts, even gown. So what about them.
We have no courage to defend our self because of that we have been pushed in the boundaries.
We very politely may adopt the concept of the relativity in the religions and let the people see the similarity in Islam and the other religions.
BURQA IS NOT IN ISLAM, HIJAB IS AND QURAN TELLS MUSLIMS TO DRESS MODESTLY.
If we want to hide our women behind Arabia style tents,it is our own fault.Muslim women are scared of education,job and free choice because of presuure from their fathers,brothers and husbands.If France wants to give choice to their Arab women who are we to cry “insult to religion” on basis of a Arabian piece of clothing.

Muslims arethe Gypsies of Europe, uneducated and unemployed drug dealers on the streets of London.Pakistani,Bangali and Turkish control the Mafia in western Europe sad but true.
Muslim hide their daughters in Burqas and the rate of education and employment is very low in Muslim Women.
Every other week there are cases of Honour Killing of Muslim women by their fathers and brothers or husband for modern Karo Kari in modern streets of 21st century Europe and the governments cannot interfere in the affairs of Mosques for fear of disturbing angry Muslims.
Hypocrisy is a two way street my friend. Identity Crisis which Crisis, Oran Pamuk the Nobel Prize winning Muslim writer cannot openly say or write in his own country Turkey because of Islamist government.He says Turkey and Islam is also suffering from Identity Crisis.The army wants to be secular and part of Europe for this they need reform in Human Rights law. The government is a suited booted Jamaat Islami without long beards they want to take Turkey back to Islamic law.
Being a English woman I have a question for the writer of this article.
It seems that Islam restricts women folk through Burqa and restriction on work and education ordriving in Saudi Arabia as I have lived there. Women need permission to travel and require a male escort.In property cannot own land and get jobs in private sector.
Why ,Is it because of Koran or the Sunnah of great Prophet Muhamed,Can you please tell me the reference of verses of Koran or the book of saying of great Prophet.
