Bravo, Tayyib Erdogan
By Prof. Dr. Mansoor Akbar Kundi • Feb 1st, 2009 • Category: Politics • 7 CommentsIt was bravo of Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a Muslim country leader to have walked out of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on 29 January, in retaliation for not allowing him sufficiently by the moderator to answer to the speech of Israeli President Shimon Peres. He stood up in anger and left the avenue by saying and starring at Shimon Peres that he would not come to Davos, a place being over for him where one cannot adequately respond to the aggressiveness Israel has been committing against innocent people. Shimon spoke for 25 minutes justifying his country’s military atrocities in Gaza. “You know very well how to kill people.”
Despite the fact Turkey has very close diplomatic relations with Israel, Tayyib Erdogan has been very vocal of his criticism of Israelian atrocities in Gaza. Tayyib Erdogan has courage and leadership qualities in national and international forums which should serve a catalyst for others. He is one of the leaders in the Muslim World having risen to power through sheer popularity and public representation. Having learnt his early lessons on the platform of Rafah Party Necibudin Erbakan whose party was edged out of power by the army via National Security Council (NSC) in June 1997 for anti-secular policies, he later on played a leading role in Fazilat Party. He was the ex-mayor of Istanbul and played an important role in its development. After Fazilat Party was banned, he was sent to 10 month imprisonment for narrating a verse in a huge public address by a Turk poet, designed to provoke political Islamic against secularism (The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers). It was a trapped set by secular forces which could not see the rising popularity of forces having immense popularity amongst public. He bravely faced the trial which was highlighted in Turkish media and public. “I am ready to be hanged if there is a single corruption or nepotism charge against me.
. It was later on the necessity and underground pressure of public Turkish establishment could not face that he was facilitated by the establishment to return to power and play a role acceptable to Turkish secular forces. He played a dominant and King maker role in the success of the AKP by uniting Islamic forces under Rafah and Fazilat. AKP has been in power since 2002.. In an article published in June 2001 Eski Erdogan degilim (I am not the old Erdogan), he showed his willingness to return to politics under a rather liberal and moderate role provided the Constitutional Court to serve his people at home and abroad. He became Prime Minister after allowed to enter pubic office as previously barred for life. The AKP respectively secured 363 and 341 (52% & 46.5% votes) in 2002 and 2007 elections and has its candidate, Abdullah Gul as the President of the Republic.
His action in Davos is the ultimate result of the leadership qualities he establishes through public representation and public mandate which ultimately leads to nation’s credibility. Credibility, in political science terminology, means that how far a statement or an action shows true intentions of an actor, party or statement. A nation’s credibility is built by its leadership. A corrupt and pseudo leadership suffering from the crisis of legitimacy not only loses credibility among citizens but internationally. A bane of the Muslim World credibility today is that we lack behind in representative system and popular leadership. America can never see any Muslim country come up with leadership having carved out of popular democracy, Islamic or even leftist revolution with mobilization of masses’. In the wake of it the leadership in power would not support US and Zionist interests in the country or region. It was true in case of Adnan Mendres; Jamal Abdul Nasser; Z.A. Bhutto; Khomeini and his successors, Mohammad Mahatir, and now Tayyib Erdogan.
The Muslim World comprising more than 55 nation-stations with massive demographic, military and economic potential is in jeopardy largely due to leadership Crisis and system building. At the crossroad of history with challenges ahead, the Muslim World needs “Situational Leadership” as Peter G Northouse describes in his book: Leadership: Theory and Practice, composed of both a directive and supportive dimensions which can be applied appropriately in a given situation. Such a leadership has public support without crisis of legitimacy.

Very nicely written. The writer:s knowledge about
Turkish politics is incisive and broad ranged.
Dear Doctor Kundi,
Just think of Pakistani leadership when it got independence.Quaid e Azam Jinnah, Zafarullah Khan(not a Muslim now as per current law), Your first law minister a Hindu. Pakhtoon leadership under Frontier Gandhi. All giants of men.Even your miitary leadership used to be respected by British generals.Read the speech by Jinnah when you got independence.
Today your country’s leadership is decimated by your Military leadership who have been acting as the mercenary force of Americans(as per Dr.Sheren mazari).Even in sports in Squash Jehangir Khan used to be a legend.
Turkeys Erdogan is having DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH ISRAEL and so he can talk his mind. But your leadership is in the hands of black goggled Saudi princes who think an American wife is the achievement of their life.
Sub continent had the first woman Muslim Princess Razia Sultan who is famous for her leadership skills.
First Muslim elected PM Benazir who could be eliminated by COWARDS only by killing. They cannot win an open election by winning the hearts of people.
SWAT,FATA,Wazirstan. They will not kill the jihadies who close girls schools, dig dead bodies but will not allow Americans to do it for them.
Even today there is no Muslim women of the calibre of Sherry rehman, Marvi Memon,Maleeha lodhi,Asma Jehangir etc in other parts of Muslim world
But i cannot say that about your MEN
I really fely happy when the TUrkish PM walked out…atleast someone had the guts….when would we, Muslims, learn to speak our mind
He is really He man among impotent muslim leaders including our majesty, highness, pir yosuf raza gillani who is mostly emphasize on his designer suiting in davos,Great relief of sigh after seeing depressing debility of coward muslim leadership on the helplessness of poor palestanians. The author has an excellent way to express the importance of strong leadership in which tayyab fits his status.Credit also goes to him as he briefly summarised the rise of this leader that is very knowIedgeable regarding turkish politics.I request TPS to kindly sent this article to turkish embassy as symbol of gratitude from this forum .We really salute his heroic effort for hurt poor souls
Indeed, what Erdagon did is a pride for us. It’s a gentle slap on our unconscious leaders.
The attributes which instill such qualities in a ruler depends on the degree by which the leader steers in politics through his own efforts. Unfortunately our leaders are not so but are cronies of their Military, and American bosses mostly. Also, they get succeeded in gripping the office and pushing straightforward politicians like Imran Khan and Asghar Khan Etc by making bombastic claims and thus making use of unaware public.
If you are thinking why our Murshid PM can’t act so the answer is simple: he has to get permission from PPP-made President!!
Thank you Erdagon,
Erdogan is corrupt and he is an islamic fascist. He is fooling the people through his rhetoric but I dont see him trying to provide them with an education or job opportunities. The only opportunities are for him, his relatives and those that have the same belief system as he does. His
family now controls41% of the media. He has done this by finding tax problems with these companies and forcing them to sell (to him). He or his family has stakes in energy, minerals, diamond retailers - you name it - he has his finger in it.
I know that pakistan cant really see that this is just corruption of the highest degree. I wonder if they think that requirements in civilised western countries for politicians to declare their wealth and give up active business life whilst they are in government are stupid or whether they are good for the people.
This is not democracy not matter what you link to think and to those of from the more civilised parts of the world where women are not used as a tool of political violence or oppression it is truly digusting to watch someone who has only ever held two government roles after growing up as poor as a church mouse turning himself and his family into one of the wealthiest families in the world. All at the expense of ALL the turkish people. I am wondering when people are going to stand up and say enough is enough and demand the politicians politic for ALL the people of the country regardless of whether they voted for him. It is called DEMOCRACY.
I’m not sure if “observer” is Turkish, but this is all true… It’s very miserable and pathetic to see someone that made it to the highest point of Turkish government, while being one of the most corrupt person alive in Turkey.
This is a fact.
