$600m urgently needed to cope with IDPs crisis
By Ghazala Khan • Jun 17th, 2009 • Category: Politics • No ResponsesForeign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said Pakistan urgently requires $600 million to cope with the internally displaced persons (IDPs) crisis.
“We need $600 million to meet the needs of the IDPs. The nation is united to help the displaced people,” the foreign minister told diplomats, media and delegates of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at the Jalozai camp here. He sought the all-out support of the international community in the ongoing struggle against militancy and extremism in the Malakand region.
“Terrorists and illegal arms are making way into Pakistan from Afghanistan and we have raised the issue with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Nato officials,” he said.
He further said that till July the UN had the capacity to support the IDPs, adding if the UN could not generate $600 million, the government would use its own resources and would not leave the people of the NWFP alone.
Earlier, the chairman of the Special Support Group for the IDPs, Lt General Nadeem, briefed the foreign diplomats about the massive relief operation for the affected people.
