23 March Once Again Here

By Muskan Hina • Mar 23rd, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 25 Comments

March has been the month of resolutions and change for the Pakistanis. This is the month of revolutions of all colors, red or velvet. On 23rd March, 1940, All India Muslim League held its annual session at Minto Park, Lahore and passed the historical Pakistan resolution.

The Pakistan Resolution stated: “No constitutional plan would be workable or acceptable to the Muslims unless geographical contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be so constituted with such territorial readjustments as may be necessary. That the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in majority as in the North-Western and Eastern zones of India should be grouped to constitute independent states in which the constituent units shall be autonomous and sovereign. That adequate, effective and mandatory safeguards shall be specifically provided in the constitution for minorities in the units and in the regions for the protection of their religious, cultural, economic, political, administrative and other rights of the minorities, with their consultation. Arrangements thus should be made for the security of Muslims where they were in a minority”.

23rd March is not yet another national holiday. It’s the reiteration of pledge that the Muslims of subcontinent wanted to create an  independent homeland, where they could live in accordance with their religious and cultural values. They got what they wanted after passing through river of blood and tears.  On 14th August, 1947 they got Pakistan.

But unfortunately with the passing of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan lost its direction. Feudal and bureacracy reigned and then for 60 years country remained hostage to the civilian and military dictators. Pakistan survived through many coups. All the pillars of state including parliament, judiciary, military, media and civil society kept on eating away the resources and yielding to the vested interests.

Then a Chief Justice appeared on the horizon and said ‘No’. That thudding ‘No’ reverberated throughout Pakistan and after the intense struggle of two years won the battle of justice. During this battle many idols crashed. One military and one civilian dictator licked the ground and rule of law prevailed.

Now, we the people of Pakistan have got a formidable task at our hands. We have to keep this candle alight. We have to fight for the total and consummate victory of the Justice. We have to make sure that this velvet revolution reaches from Gwadar to Kohat and from Karachi to Khyber and from Khunjrab to Azam Warsak.

Having passed the Pakistan Resolution in 1940, the Muslims of India changed their ultimate goal. Instead of seeking alliance with the Hindu community, they set out on a path whose destination was a separate homeland for the Muslims of India. Now in 2009, Pakistanis have changed their goal too. Instead of surrendering to the forces of status quo they have set their eyes on the lofty objective of making Pakistan, the Pakistan of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

  7. Yeah, Muskan Hina - Calenders are brutally consistent! Every year this date March 23 religiously shows up and also religiously reminds that we are failing, failing also consistently since 1947. But then we seem to be stubborn enough to just hang around and wait till like our ‘former’ siblings the once East Pakistanis another day replaces March 23 - I sincerely hope that I am untterly and totally wrong - but it seems with this prevailing attitude who knows what future holds. TIME TO WAKE UP!

InshaALLAH again PPP under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari will make Pakistan an economic power…….

  15. Hey, Sidra! thanks and same heartiest wishes. It would be nice if you call us Pakistanis and teach this to those natives of the not so United Kingdom that it is not ‘pakis’ - it is Pakistan and Pakistanis!

  16. Guys this is the reason for formation of Pakistan and not the one it is having now.

  17. Hi Muskan,
Thanks for posting the Pakistan resolution again. None of the commentators have any word about this need for autonomy, minority rights etc. They are more interested in 23rd march or your smile which must be great!!!!

  18. Guys this is the speech given by the AJK President on radio in Kashmir.

    http://www.thenews.com.pk/print1.asp?id=168620.

In which he says that Kashmir is part of Pakistan as it is also a Muslim state or country or whatever. But what about the other part of the story. What about the people whom we most of the time forget and only look at Kashmir as Muslim population of the region. They were also the inhabitants of the place we all know as Jammu and Kashmir. They are called the Kashmiri Pandits.

People all over the place shout that India is killing Muslims over there they are occupying the place illegally and so on and so forth. But what about this community who is also suffering and no one seems to care about them.

Does the people whom people of Pakistan in general say as freedom fighter care for them? Does the people from LeT or Jud or any other group that is fighting Indian army in the region care for this community? I guess no. No one, I say it loud NO ONE, let it be the JuD or LeT or any other group cares for these guys. They only care for the Muslim population of the region. Aren’t these guys part of Kashmir? They have been staying over there for generations. Many people of this community have moved out of Kashmir in 1980’s when the militancy started as they first targeted this group tortured them and killed them. They moved out of Kashmir and migrated to other parts of India.

Many moved into refugee camps setup in Jammu region were there is still Hindu population. They have been staying in these camps for many years. Few families have been staying there for 20 years or like since the militancy first started. Do the AJK President care for this population?

I have no problem if Kashmir becomes part of Pakistan, but does the people take into consideration the population which is non-Muslim while making this decision? No. Many people with Hindu and Buddhism origin have moved out of the region, will anyone care to take their views on this issue? No.

They will only look at the Muslims of the region and the Muslim ummah as you guys say it. But what about the other communities of Jammu and Kashmir. If Pakistan and its people shouts about violations done by Indian army, they shout also look at the violations done by these so called freedom fighters of Kashmir, who have been killing fellow Kashmiris’ who are non-Muslims.
