2009 Election Pakistan : Preparations are already under way

By Brig. (r) Junaid Zaman • Feb 21st, 2008 • Category: Worth A Second Look • No Responses

Or they could happen at the end of 2008, but the thing is that new elections in Pakistan are bound to happen after around six or 12 months. It’s inevitable. These elections are just a step towards true democracy and a milestone in the struggle.

These elections have given hope to the people of Pakistan, and have told them that they could intimidate the formidable establishment which is in actual very weak and hollow. The current would-be hung parliament is very unrealistic and un-natural and due to the low voter turnout it’s far from lasting. More voters want to say that they hate PML-Q.

The winning and losing parties all know this and they have already started preparations for the new elections. Nobody is showing any excitement to form a government, as they know the un-viability and uselessness of forming a government under the supervision of General (r) Pervaiz Musharraf. They know that until and unless he leaves the throne, they wouldn’t be judged as successful in the eyes of the Pakistanis.

Asif Ali Zardari has shown his long vision, and has excluded himself from the candidature of Prime Minister. This way he has “shown” his bigheartedness to the people and to the party workers and have scored huge points, and have paved the way for his future candidacy for Prime Minister. He has also said that they want governance not just the government.

Nawaz Sharif can also afford to enjoy his firm and unwavering stance over judiciary, and by sticking to that stance, he could keep on supporting lawyers movement and gaining points in nation while sweetly criticizing the PPP regime which is still very murky over the issue of reinstatement of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary.

PML-Quashed, which has really been wiped out of the four provinces and the center (In Balochistan, there seats are due to personalities and not due to the party), and they would try to keep their lotas by showing them hope for next near elections. Though, the truth is that luckily PML-Q is the thing of past.

New elections so soon are not a bad thing. They are inevitable and they are crucial for the true democracy in the country. Nation should also brace them with the renewed passion.
